Goal: Pupils will be able to say the sound of the letter Q/q, the words square, question, quiz, and the structure “He’s/She’s     (V-ing).” in a chant.

Input: There are three verses in the chant. The letter Q/q, the word square, the sentence “He’s colouring a square.” are in the first verse. The letter Q/q, the word question, the sentence “He’s answering a question.” are in the second verse. The letter Q/q, the word quiz, the sentence “She’s doing a quiz.” are in the third verse. The letter Q/q is in red.

Procedure: Step 1: Have pupils look at the picture and answer some questions such as Who are in the picture?, Can you see the square?, etc.

Step 2: Have pupils look at the first verse. Ask them to pay attention to the letters Q/q, the word square, and the sentence “He’s colouring a square.” Explain the meaning of this sentence. Check comprehension.

Step 3: Play the recording of each line in the first verse. Have pupils point to the letter, the word, the sentence, listen and repeat. Correct pronunciation if necessary.

Step 4: Follow the same procedure with the second and third verses. Show pupils how to clap their hands/do actions.

Step 5: Play the recording of the whole chant again (more than once if necessary) for pupils to listen and repeat in chorus.

Step 6: Have pupils work in pairs or groups to practise singing the chant. Go around to offer help if necessary. Praise them when they perform well.

Step 7: Then select some groups to the front of the class to chant and clap their hands/do actions. The rest of the class may give comments.

Outcome: Pupils can sing the chant with correct pronunciation, natural stress and rhythm.
